GLOBAL AWARENESS WEEK FOR ANTI-MICROBIAL RESISTOR

Every year, from November 18 to 24, World Antimicrobial Resistance Week is held, dedicated to the problem of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), one of the most serious threats to modern healthcare and socio-economic development.

Resistance occurs when microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, fungi) adapt to drugs that previously successfully destroyed them. This is due to:

- irrational use of antibiotics, for example, for viral infections;

- failure to comply with the prescribed course of treatment;

- environmental pollution.

These factors contribute to the spread of resistant pathogens that threaten the health of people, animals and the environment. According to the World Health Organization, today up to 700,000 people die every year from infections caused by resistant microorganisms.

Drugs that previously saved millions of lives are gradually losing their effectiveness. Resistant microorganisms are spreading everywhere: from hospital wards to agricultural lands. For example, antifungal drugs are often used to protect plants, and resistant microorganisms are found in water bodies due to pollution.

What measures are being taken around the world?

In order to raise awareness of the AMR problem, in 2015 WHO initiated the annual observance of World Antimicrobial Awareness Week in mid-November.

Since 2023, the campaign has been held under the updated name "World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week". The theme for 2024 is "Educate. Advocate. Act now."

In 2015, countries around the world signed the Global Action Plan to Combat AMR and committed to developing national programs. In Kazakhstan, the Roadmap on Antimicrobial Resistance was approved, aimed at effective intersectoral coordination.

How to prevent resistance?

1. Use antibiotics strictly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not take them if you do not have an infection or if you are able to control the symptoms of the disease. 2. Complete the entire course of treatment. Do not stop taking the drug at the first signs of improvement.

3. Avoid self-medication. Treatment should only be prescribed by a specialist.

4. Protect the environment. Reducing pollution will help reduce the spread of resistant microorganisms.

The problem of antimicrobial resistance is still relevant today and requires an immediate response.

SK-Pharmaceuticals calls for the responsible use of antimicrobials and recommends avoiding the uncontrolled use of antibiotics.

Take care of yourself and your loved ones!
